5 Fandom Friday: My Must See List of Halloween Movies

This week's 5 Fandom Friday was totally hard for me! I'm the person who always wants to watch comedies and cartoons. Scary movies are simply not my favorite, so my knowledge of Halloween movies is quite weak. Here's what I'll be watching over the next week until Halloween:

Casper- Before Paranormal Activity, there was Casper and Dr. James Harvey. He might be a friendly ghost, but this movie touches on some serious scenes about accepting death. Remember when he says, 'Can I keep you?' while dancing with Kat? The ultimate creepy moment.

Shaun of the Dead-...because Simon Pegg.  I like most zombie movies like 28 Days Later, but Shaun of the Dead has something for everyone- horror, comedy, and romance. The soundtrack is killer too.

Hocus Pocus- Seriously a classic. I have watched this movie so many times even when it's not Halloween. The Sanderson Sisters are hilarious and Thackery Binx is a babe. Black cats, zombies, and spells that make you dance until you die...that's scary enough for me.

Edward Scissorhands- This movie is a Frankenstein-esque story of being alone and learning to love. Sounds just like Halloween right? (ha) I'm obsessed with the combo of gothic + retro pastel, and my heart aches everytime I watch this movie. It's one of my all time favorites.

The Addams Family- They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky! Wednesday Addams is the ultimate halloween character being obsessed with death and torture. The Addams Family movies are all so silly, but you can't help but watch them every year. I'd be afraid if they lived next door to me.

Honorable Mention: Phantom of the Opera- I have never seen the movie version, but going to Phantom on Broadway is phenomenal. I really enjoy musicals, and a mysterious, disfigured man terrorizing an opera house completely engulfs you in the story. It was announced yesterday that ABC is making Phantom into a modernized tv show. I have no idea how that will turn out but will give the pilot a shot.

My list of must see Halloween movies are not scary at all. What movies are your must sees for Halloween-time? I need to give more horror movies a chance. (during the day with the lights on)

5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Would Love To Dress Up As For Halloween

It's hard to believe that Halloween is almost here! I am not the biggest horror movie fan, but I have been watching The Angry Video Game Nerd's Monster Madness videos to get into the spirit of things. Every Halloween I want to think up an elaborate costume but always end up throwing something together at the last minute. Plus let's face it- when my boyfriend dresses up like Yoshi, he gets all the attention anyway.

Since I'm not a blood and gore kind of person, it's no surprise that the characters I'd love to dress up as for Halloween are made up of sparkly rainbow happiness.

Eureeka of Eureeka's Castle-  I loved this show growing up! I think it would be a lot of fun to do a group costume of the characters. Batly would be my second choice.

Tickled Pink of Rainbow Brite- Since my hair is pastel pink, it's the perfect year to be a character from Rainbow Brite! If I set enough time aside, I think I could make an adorable costume inspired by her.

Andie Walsh of Pretty in Pink- John Hughes movies are the best, and one of my favorites is Pretty in Pink. It would be a dream to pull off a couple costume as Andie and Duckie from the film. Most people would recognize her pink prom dress, but I adore this floral outfit.

Taffyta Muttonfudge of Wreck it Ralph- How fun would it be to be a Sugar Rush racer? I don't like that Taffyta bullies sweet, little Vanellope, but her strawberry hat would be a blast to make and wear.

Bonbon from Little Nemo-  Not many people remember this movie and always assume I mean Pixar's Finding Nemo when I bring it up. It's both whimsical and creepy. I want to make a costume for Bonbon. She's the cute clown towards the middle. (if you love Little Nemo too, let's be best online friends.)

This week's Fandom 5 list got me brainstorming, but I better start working on a costume with Halloween only 2 weeks away! Do you have a Halloween costume planned?

5 Fandom Friday: Geeky Clothing Items I Need In My Closet Immediately

With the popularity of superhero movies and geek culture in general, there is no shortage of fangirl fashion. It still surprises me when I walk into Target and find Star Wars shirts or that Hot Topic carries Sanrio and Disney.

I like to walk the line of cute and nerdy by mixing bold comic book patterns with adorable animals and pastel colors. My closet wishlist grows every day, and now with Twitter & Instagram, it's so easy to find those must-have geek girl items. Just the other day, Sparklegirl Jen posted a link to Teefury's shirt of the day, and I bought it right away. I couldn't resist the Harley Quinn + Haunted Mansion mash up!

For the second week of Fandom Friday, here are the geeky clothing items I need in my closet immediately...or at least will be added to my Christmas wishlist.

I Love Handmade: Sherlock

Are you a Sherlock fan? I am! Even if you have not watched the BBC Series, you've probably heard of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who play Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Maybe you remember Cumberbatch as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness or Freeman as Bilbo in The Hobbit?

Sherlock is a TV series that I instantly fell for. The stories of Sherlock Holmes are given a modern twist set in 21st century London. You cannot help but get attached to the characters and their distinctive personalities. Fiction mixed with science and psychology mixed with humor. It's a win-win for me.

There are so many Sherlock-inspired items online, and I really want to stitch something for the Synapse to Synapse shop too! Here are my favorite finds from handmade artists.

I can't wait for the next series to air- hopefully in 2015- which means if you haven't watched it, you have plenty of time to catch up.

Are you Sherlocked?

5 Fandom Friday: Gateway Fandoms That Made Me Who I Am Today

5 Fandom Friday is a project started by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick where each week you post a top 5 list on a predetermined topic. It's a perfect way to explore your geeky self and link up with others to share. You can read all about the details here and here

This Friday's topic is Gateway Fandoms that made me who I am today. I feel as though I could list off dozens of movies and games I've grown to love, but I'm digging deeper on my top 5 list. Most of my gateway fandoms come from childhood, and I believe led to so many of my current obsessions in pop culture today.

Chip's Challenge and Commander Keen
Computer games were definitely my gateway into playing video games. While my brother was hogging the NES, I was navigating through puzzles and bouncing around on a virtual pogo stick. I still play both of these games and get completely enthralled all over again.

Disney
Some of my earliest memories are of Disney. Dancing around the living room to Sing-A-Long VHS tapes, wearing Minnie polka-dot pants, and refusing to take a family photo without my Rolly Polly dalmatian. If there's one thing that's never changed, it's that I love Disney.

I Love Lucy
I grew up watching a lot of TV Land...by choice. I Love Lucy has to be my favorite out of all the shows. I still collect memorabilia and completely adore Lucille Ball. The Munsters, I Dream of Jeannie, and Laverne & Shirley are right behind too. There is something so magical and soothing about these classic shows to me.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Four handsome turtles guided me to embrace being myself in high school. I felt like I fit in more wearing a TMNT backpack and doing ninja moves in the hallways, because it's who I am. When I explore my own imagination, I feel the most comfortable. Whoa- I'm getting sentimental...also pizza!

Animal Crossing
My last obsession is from more recent times. I played Animal Crossing on Gamecube, but Animal Crossing New Leaf on 3DS is where most of my free time is spent. Adorable little characters in an adorable little village. Kawaii overload. I even dyed my own hair pink, because of how much I love my character in the game! (That's her in the photo getting coffee)

There you have it. The 5 Gateway Fandoms that made me who I am today. What are your fandom influences?
