5 Fandom Friday: Geeks Who Inspire Me

This week has flown by, and it's time for another 5 Fandom Friday! Today's topic digs a little deeper exploring geeks who inspire me. I'm not always the best at expressing feelings and would rather make jokes, but I think it's important to acknowledge people who have paved the way for geeks to be geeks.

Sir Patrick Stewart 

I've always admired Patrick Stewart, especially his advice that 'how you live is as important as what you do.'  He has also spoken out on several occasions on domestic violence.

The International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club (IGGPPC)

A snail-mail community of geeks who all yearn for the same thing- to be ourselves. Not only are friendships made, you truly feel like you belong. I am constantly inspired by members of the #IGGPPC.

George Takei
He is witty and brave- civil rights activist, proponent for LBGTQ rights, the ultimate optimist. I got so emotional watching To Be Takei and feel in love with him even more as a human being.

Lucille Ball
Maybe Lucille is not a geek in your book, but she is in mine. She has been one of my heroes my entire life. With a legacy of risk taking, she was part of so many firsts in the industry. Lucille never gave up on herself despite criticism or risks to beauty.

The Angry Video Game Nerd- James Rolfe
He proves generation Y is not an entitled,  lazy generation. James does what he loves and pours passion and effort into his AVGN videos. (Plus his game collection is an inspiration in itself!)

I honestly could name so many more geeks who inspire me, but that's the beauty of it. We're not alone! Who inspires you?

5 Fandom Friday: Crossovers That Would Make My Heart Explode

I'm coming back to the Fandom 5 bandwagon! This week's topic is all about crossovers. It took me a little while to get in the right head space to think up believable pop-culture intersections. I am used to talking in depth about my favorite shows and fandoms but have never really explored intermixing them.

Even while posting this I'm asking myself... am I doing this right? Maybe crossovers only truly make sense in our own imaginations. Here are mine:


Parks & Recreation meets Double Dare
Imagine Leslie intensely cheering along Andy as he searches for a flag from a giant nose filled with green slime. 

Winnie the Pooh meets Guardians of the Galaxy
Some groups come together in strange ways and have qualities that balance one another out. Now who from the Winnie the Pooh gang would be Groot?

Arrested Development meets Star Trek TNG
I'm already laughing to myself imaging the dysfunctional Bluth family leading the Starship Enterprise.

Animal Crossing meets Disneyland
This would be my dream world! All my favorite villagers in a life-size land where I can run around playing the entire day.

Hunger Games meets Back to the Future

What if Katniss could travel back in time to bring down the Capitol or *SPOILER* save her sister's life? She and Peeta would have to figure out how to alter history without completely interring, but I think this combo would be an addicting TV show.

Everyday Cosplays from IGGPPCamp

It's no secret that I adore the International Geek Girl Pen Pal Club. This past week they had their 2nd annual summer camp full of interactive activities to bring geeks all over the world together like making s'mores, playing games, and my favorite- everyday cosplay. 

I often Disneybound, so when the Pen Pal Club posted an 'Everyday Closet Cosplay Challenge,' I knew I had to participate! Each day there was a prompt of what kind of outfit to put together from items already in your closet. From Disney to comics, everyone picked their favorite fandoms to display. Combining colors and adding accessories that hint to a character is an extremely creative process, which I get a happy rush from.


Day 1: Disney Princess- Tiger Lily
 























Day 2: Pixar - Green Men from Toy Story
 























Day 3: 80s Cartoons- April O'Neil of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
 
























Day 4: Marvel Comics- Wolverine

Day 6: Troop Hakuna Matata - The Lion King
